R. Howard 116Title: \;Investigating the nuclear rol e of alpha-synucleinAbstract: \;Alpha-synuclein is the major componen t of the cytoplasmic protein aggregates\, Lewy bodies\, which are the pat hological hallmark of Parkinson's disease. It is unknown how Lewy bodies contribute to the cell death that is observed in Parkinson's disease. Alp ha-synuclein is found at the synapse and nucleus\, but its function withi n the nucleus has not been characterized. I hypothesize that alpha-synucl ein may play a role in the repair of double strand-breaks\, which have em erged as a unifying feature of neurodegenerative diseases. I present work testing this hypothesis using zebrafish as a model system to study 1) th e nuclear recruitment of alpha-synuclein\; and 2) the specific localizati on of alpha-synuclein to sites of DNA double strand-break repair.Related Paper: \;Merlo\, Daniela\, Cristiana Mollinari\, Mauro Racaniello\, E nrico Garaci\, and Alessio Cardinale.
