Join us for a reception with alumni and parents, and a performance of “Jabulile!” written and performed by senior Kemiyondo Coutinho ’12, directed and introduced by Professor of Theatre Stephanie Arnold.

“Jabulile!” is a one-woman play, written and performed by Kemiyondo Coutinho.
The play tells the story of four Swazi women. Jabulile (the main character)  an optimistic street vendor who claims to always wear a smile, introduces the audience to her drunken husband, childhood memories, manipulative customers, friends, her spiteful mother in-law and finally leads up to reliving the death of her daughter. As the audience takes the journey of her life, they come to understand that she keeps going on for the memory of her daughter.


More on Kemiyondo Coutinho Kemiyondo Coutinho, was born in Kampala, Uganda. At the age of 3 weeks she moved to Swaziland, where she completed her primary and high school education. She began writing plays and performing a one-woman show in high school. She is currently completing a degree in theatre and communications.

More on Professor Stephanie Arnold Stephanie Arnold received her B.A. degree in English from Stanford University and then continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin where she received an M.F.A. degree in directing and a Ph.D. in dramatic literature and theory. Before joining the Lewis & Clark College faculty in 1986, she taught at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside. Stephanie Arnold teaches acting, directing, and dramatic literature including a special topics course in Latino Theatre.
