Why Health Care is Ravenous for Mathematicians

Kristin Harding

Providence Health and Services

You are invited join the Probability and Statistics class, to hear this speaker.

The Affordable Care Act and other recent health care reforms are dramatically reinventing how health care is organized and financed.  Everyone—insurance companies, doctors and nurses, patients and caregivers are being incentivized to conceive of health care in totally new ways.  One of the surprises: out of these policy shifts has emerged a need for a new “mathematics of health.”

This presentation will give a brief overview of recent health care reform efforts in Oregon and will introduce why new ways of using mathematics, statistics and probability will be essential to both the sustainability of health systems and the quality of the patient care of the future.
