David Reich has argued that behavioral and cognitive traits, and as well as distinctive genetic risks, map onto traditional ideas of race. This claim has occasioned scandal. I argue that Reich conflates the gene of population genetics with the molecular gene, with the result that in the case of modern humans he fails to work with a sufficiently rich conception of how culture affects evolution. The claim has general application for philosophy of biology.
