Don’t Just Do Representation: #AskForMore

With hashtags like #RepresentationMatters, it seems like racial representation in the media is making progress. But while producers are checking their diversity boxes and patting themselves on the back, diversity becomes synonymous with the quantity of difference rather than the dimensionality of performances. We need to #askformore.

SMART Documentary Advance Screening

THE POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED TO CAMPUS. THE SCREENING WILL BE TAKING PLACE AS SCHEDULED.

Student Activities is proud to present the Portland advance screening of the SMART a feature-length documentary by Justin Zimmerman.

SMART is a groundbreaking feature-length documentary about a group of highly trained, adrenaline-fueled professionals who risk life and limb to rescue animals! They’re Los Angeles’ Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team, and they save anything and everything, wild or domestic, from an array of dangerous situations. Shot over the course of three years, SMART follows team lead Armando Navarrete as he helps lift a horse from a river by helicopter, tranquilizes a deer in Pee-Wee Herman’s back yard and falls five stories from the top of a tree. But the rescues come at great cost, both on personal and professional levels, while there’s another struggle being fought behind the bars at the animal shelters. Armando refuses to let an animal die alone in the dark, but in the end, Armando may be trying to rescue himself.

Legacies of Genocide Film Series - AGHET: EIN VÖLKERMORD

Spring Film Series:
Legacies of Genocide

In the 67 years since the ratification of the word “Genocide”, how has this word shaped our global conversation around these atrocities and events? Are we more apt to group all mass violence into one heading or does this word stand as a specific definition? How do we continue to discuss these genocides in our history as new genocides erupt on our political horizons?

Our three films- Screamers, Watchers of the Sky and Aghet each address the question of language and legacy around genocide and human rights. How do we discuss the global impact of how we as people treat one another in times of crisis and cruelty? Has the creation of the word “genocide” done what its creator hoped? Or has the word itself created an erasure of mass atrocity in itself? Where are we as we look back on our past and to our future?

Movie Premiere - Sara’s Columbine

Student Activities is proud to present the premiere of SARA’S COLUMBINE a film by Justin Zimmerman.

SARA’S COLUMBINE is a documentary that focuses on one woman’s experience with the horrific 1999 school shooting, and how this historic encounter changed her during three distinct periods of her life. After she survived the massacre, Sara was featured on a multitude of media outlets, culminating in a Montel Williams Show ‘special’ just two days after the event. This footage, along with personal interviews conducted in 2005 and 2014 and hundreds of scanned photos, makes up SARA’S COLUMBINE, a powerful and inspirational personal journey.

With the rise of transnationalism, citizens are leaving their nations to fight for a cause that they believe is just (such as Americans and Europeans going to fight for ISIS). Although television is overwhelmingly a commercial medium, audiences still expect boundaries between commercials and program content, particularly in narrative programming.
