Spanish Language Community

The Spanish Language Communities will focus on the study of the language and culture of the Hispanic World.  Through programs, reading, media and community events, students will participate in the enrichment of Hispanic cultures at Lewis & Clark.  Some of the topics that will be covered include language acquisition, ethnic and gender relations and interactions, popular culture and its many expressions, politics and societal reality of the Hispanic World, and presence and relevance of the Hispanic population in Oregon and the US.

The residential Spanish language community consists of four-bedroom apartments in the West Rogers dormitory where up to 7 students of Spanish and a Fulbright Language Assistant from Latin America or Spain reside.

Learning goals:

At the end of the academic year, students can expect to:

  • have increased their language fluency
  • have increased their awareness of the Hispanic World.
  • know more about the reality of Hispanics in Oregon and the US.
  • have increased their ability to relate to mass media production in Spanish
Student Participation Principles:

Students participating in the Spanish Language Community will:

  • speak in Spanish when interacting with other members of the residence
  • attend at least one program a month sponsored by the Spanish Language Community
  • participate in a designated “weekly activity” (this may involve, among other possibilities, a reading or other media viewing and discussion)
