Faculty with Term

The designation of “faculty with term” allows the College to hire and retain excellent faculty when a tenure-track line is not available. Qualifications are generally comparable to those for appointment to a tenure-track position. Appointment to faculty with term is not a simple extension of a visiting position and the successful application requires demonstrating both an individual’s unique talents (not likely attainable through another visitor) and the curriculum’s long-term, persistent enrollment demand in the individual’s course offerings.

Responsibilities / Duties of Faculty With Term

  • Normally full-time, defined as a six course load per year.
  • Appointment to a five-course load would normally be accompanied by a research/creative expectation and/or significant service responsibilities (including expected contribution to both pre-major and major advising).
  • Positions may, with consent of the department and the Dean, be half-time.
  • Initial contracts are for three years. Subsequent re-appointments will be at least three years, and departments may request up to a five-year contract, when warranted by high enrollment demand and other factors.
  • Required participation in triennial reviews, with eligibility for the COLA and merit increases as outlined in the faculty salary process.
  • Eligible for conference and research support as outlined in the faculty resources guidelines.
  • Specifics for each appointment will be determined upon hire.

Application Guidelines:

Please note that normally, applicants will have taught at the College for at least four years at five courses or greater.

Applications for new faculty with term are normally reviewed once a year. Applications will be reviewed by the Dean and the Associate Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Council. Except in truly extraordinary circumstances, initial appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor with Term. Final decisions on appointment reside with the Dean of the College.

Pre-proposals are accepted early in January and should include a CV and response to a brief survey. The department chair should be aware of and support the pre-proposal.

Invitations to apply will be sent to those who meet criteria and are likely to have a competitive case.

Applications for faculty with term appointment should include:

  • A cover letter describing how the applicant’s teaching demonstrates the standard of excellence we require at LC and a description of how teaching and/or work in the campus community will contribute to a culture of inclusion and campus diversity
  • A faculty with term appointment includes responsibilities in addition to teaching (e.g., advising, scholarship/creative work, etc). Describe what responsibilities are anticipated and preparation for such expanded activities.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness, including a complete set of teaching evaluations at LC (course evaluations from other institutions may also be included) and other materials that allow an evaluation of pedagogical approach, such as course syllabi, assignments, and/or exams.

In addition to these materials from the applicant, the department chair or program director should provide a letter addressing the following:

  • how the candidate has demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • why curricular needs cannot be satisfied with a short-term visiting position
  • what long-term, high-demand curricular areas the candidate would teach in and how the candidate’s hire is uniquely positioned to help the College meet that demand
  • a proposed four-year teaching schedule that illustrates the applicant’s particular curricular role in a departmental four-year plan (including participation in CORE and/or interdisciplinary programs), if this was not included in the 4-year plan submitted during the fall semester

  • Pre-proposals due: January 20, 2023
