    Nancy Allan BS ’57, April 3, 2020, age 84. Allan met and married Ed in 1959, the beginning of 56 years of marriage. She was active in local church communities and concert organizations. Survivors include her children, Jeanie and Andrew, and two grandchildren.

    Lloyd Babler BS ’57, December 20, 2018, age 87. Before his time at Lewis & Clark, Babler served aboard the USS New Jersey during the Korean War, spending 42 months at sea. Upon his return and subsequent graduation, he founded Western International Investors and Developers with his brother, Thomas, and friend, Ray Town. Over the course of a full career, he was a life member of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, chair of the negotiating committee for the Associated General Contractors, and founder of the Oregon chapter of the State Asphalt Pavement Association. Survivors include his wife, Patricia; children Megan, Heidi, and Christopher; and three grandchildren.

    Curtis D. Guthrie BS ’57, June 15, 2022, age 88. Guthrie began his career as a teacher in Taft, Oregon. In 1958, he moved to Portland, where he worked at Cleveland High School and later Wilson High School. Guthrie particularly enjoyed the period of his life when he and his son were both teaching two doors down the hall from one another. Survivors include his children, Scott and Joan; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    Keith Harcourt BA ’57, June 20, 2019, age 84. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Harcourt completed his medical training at the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health & Science University) and practiced general surgery in Pendleton, Oregon, for 32 years. After retiring, he remained active and volunteered with several organizations, including Hospice of Pendleton, the Oregon Public Health Advisory Board, and his church. Harcourt is survived by his wife, Patricia Akse Harcourt BS ’57; children Matt, Brian, and Joyce Harcourt-Meyersick ’85; brothers Hugh Harcourt BA ’52 and Scott Harcourt; and two grandchildren.

    Helen Hendry Huff BA ’57, December 2, 2020, age 86. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Huff, with the help of a Fulbright Scholarship, embarked on a journey to Austria, where she spent several years working and studying drama and set design. In 1959, upon returning to the United States, she met Richard, and the two were soon married. Huff was a fighter for adult education, earning several master’s degrees in the field. She worked in programs to advance adult literacy and vocational education as well as to improve accessibility to education for the homeless or otherwise underserved. Survivors include children Teresa and Dorothea; grandchildren Rosamund, Aubrey, and Antonia; and many other family members and friends.

    Gordon W. Johnson BA ’57, May 6, 2022, age 91. Johnson served as a youth pastor at several churches in Oregon and California and later aa a senior pastor. Survivors include his wife, Priscilla, and his children, Kimberlie and Paul.

    Edward L. Kay BS ’57, November 5, 2020, age 89. Survivors include his wife, Judith, and his daughter, Heidi.

    Charles E. Kraft BA ’57, June 12, 2019, age 83. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Kraft served in the Navy. In 1964, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon. Kraft taught history at Portland Community College for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1994. He loved to travel, and his favorite destinations included Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Mexico. Survivors include his siblings, Lenanne and Gerry; his son, Kevin; and two grandchildren.

    Marianne Lane BS ʼ57, January 4, 2020, age 83. She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Myron.

    Jerry B. McClelland BS ’57, January 17, 2019, age 83. McClelland was a professional musician and music teacher who loved his work. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening. McClelland was a generous volunteer in his church, Lake Grove Presbyterian, and a loyal attendee of any event in which his grandchildren were involved. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Nancy; children, Beth, Bruce, and Bonnie; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

    Joseph W. Pashak BS ’57, December 14, 2019, age 90. Pashak was a food inspector with the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1989. An avid traveler, he visited every state in the U.S. and more than 50 countries. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, and camping. He was also an active volunteer and served as president of the PTA at Kennedy Elementary School in Salem, Oregon. Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Anita; his children, Jeffrey, Kimberly, and Gregory; and six grandchildren.

    Mary J. Peterson CAS ’57, January 24, 2021, age 87. Survivors include her daughter, Courtney; her granddaughter, Jessica; and many other loving family members and friends.

    Howard Purvis BA ’57, May 23, 2022, age 86. Purvis taught at Pacific Lutheran University before pursuing a doctorate at the University of Oregon. He later received a Fulbright grant, which allowed him to teach in Berlin, Germany, before he returned to Oregon as a high school teacher. He retired in 1994. Purvis loved classic cars, camping, and spending time with his sons. Survivors include his children, Leland and Michael; a grandchild; and many other family members and friends.
