Symposia
One special feature of the Lewis & Clark experience is our unique series of student-driven symposia. Each symposium is a two- or three-day series of presentations, workshops, readings, performances, debates, and other opportunities to engage creatively and intellectually with complex local, national, and global issues.
Supported and mentored by faculty every step of the way, students build community and practical skills as they collaborate on symposium themes, topics, and programming.
A key space for learning beyond the classroom, symposia sometimes even generate ideas for projects and launch careers. At their core, these symposia reflect the Lewis & Clark commitment to inquiry, innovation, collaboration, and global engagement.

I was a committee member and am currently one of the cochairs of the International Affairs Symposium. It is a great feeling getting to see a year’s worth of work come alive. I have also been able to meet and work with some of the most talented people.

In 2021, Carmen Maria Machado gave a keynote speech for the Gender Studies Symposium. At the time, I was taking fiction writing classes where we read some of her pieces, so it was a wonderful opportunity to listen to an author who I was pretty familiar with.

If in our classes we learn about the conditions of the world, then the Ray Warren Symposium on Race and Ethnic Studies offers the opportunity of both learning about the world and changing it.
