Course Registration
WebAdvisor is the online platform that all L&C students use to register for classes.
You can log into WebAdvisor by using your L&C User ID & password.
Here are some key areas in your Student menu to know about prior to registration:
- User Account -> Emergency Contact Info: You will not be able to register for anything until you have updated this information.
- Academic Profile -> Test Summary: Check to ensure that your placement exam results have been upload, and to verify that L&C has received your AP or IB exam results.
- Registration: You will register for your yourself courses using WebAdvisor. This menu has several sections that will be explained more fully below.
- Registration -> Registration Permissions: After clicking this link, you will be prompted to select the following term, 24/FA. The next screen will indicate the dates and times you may register. This screen will also show any course permissions you have.
- Academic Profile -> My Class Schedule: Double check the results of your registration by checking your schedule before logging off. Choose “My Class Schedule” to verify that you registered for your course(s) correctly.
This summer you will register for your fall semester courses two rounds:
- Your first registration round is on August 1. In this first round, you will register for two 4 or 5-credit courses (note that you cannot register for a PE/A or MUP course in the first round).
Because you can register for only two courses at this time, register for the ones that are most important to you.
- Your second registration round is on August 3. In this second round, you will register for all remaining courses. Remember, going into this registration round you will already be registered for 8 or 9 credits (the courses you registered on August 1).
You must be registered for a minimum of 12 credits in fall semester to reach full-time status, and we encourage students to register for 15 to 17 credits each semester. The maximum number of credits you can take is 19.
To view your registration round times on August 1 and August 3:
- Login to WebAdvisor using your LC User ID (lc24-xxxx) and password
- Click on the Students menu
- Under Registration, select Registration Permissions
- Choose 24/FA CAS-Fall 2024 You should now be able to see the dates and times at which you are scheduled to register for your courses on on August 1 and August 3. Note that times are listed in the pacific time zone.
After your second registration round, registration remains open until August 16, when it shuts down until New Student Orientation.
During New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 25, registration will re-open for transfer students at 11:20 am, and stay open until 11am on Friday, August 26.
After that, registration is closed until the start of the add/drop period. The add/drop period begins on the first day of classes, Tuesday, September 3, and ends on Friday, September 15 at 4pm (for more information on registering for classes during the add/drop period, review this page on the Registrar’s website).
The College Catalog lists all of the courses offered at Lewis & Clark; however, not all courses are offered every semester. The courses that are offered in a particular semester are listed on our registration website, called WebAdvisor.
1. Go to WebAdvisor.
2. Log in using your WebAdvisor User ID and password. Select the Students menu.
3. Under the Registration heading, select Search for Sections.
4. From the Term drop-down menu, select CAS - Fall 2024.
5. To search for courses in a particular subject area, simply enter the name of the subject and click Submit. (You may search the course offerings of up to five subjects at once, and it is not necessary to fill in the entire search form - just entering a the term and subject area(s) is sufficient).
6. Click Submit.
7. If you see a course you would like to learn more about in the Section Selection Results page, click on the title of the course to open a new window and read a description, determine if there are any prerequisites, and to see complete scheduling information about when and where the course meets.
Prior to registration on August 1 and 3, you can use WebAdvisor to search for classes and save them in a Preferred Sections list, which is like a shopping cart. When you are ready to register for classes, you can return to this list to easily complete your registration.
Right now, you will notice a temporary placeholder course (ADMN 100) on your Fall schedule. You should drop this placeholder course as soon as you are able to register on August 1.
First, start by adding classes to your Preferred Section list:
1. Go to WebAdvisor.
2. Log in using your WebAdvisor User ID and password.
3. Under the Registration heading, select Register for Sections.
4. Choose Search and Register for Sections.
5. From the Term drop-down menu, select CAS - Fall 2024.
6. To search for courses in a particular subject area, simply enter the name of the subject and click Submit. (You may search the course offerings of up to five subjects at once, and it is not necessary to fill in the entire search form - just entering the term and subject area(s) is sufficient).
7. Click Submit.
8. To learn more about a particular course, click on its section name and title. An information window will pop up. If the course interests you, check if there are any prerequisites or restrictions.
9. Once you find a course listing that intrigues you, return to search results and place the course in your Preferred Sections list by checking the box next to the section name (to the far left of that course’s information) and clicking Submit at the bottom of the page.
10. Continue looking for courses to add to your Preferred Sections list by clicking on Search for Sections. You can remove a section from this list at any time by using the Action drop-down menu next to the course you wish to remove.
On August 1 and 3, follow these steps to register for classes:
1. Log into WebAdvisor, go to your Student page and click on “Register for Sections.”
2. Next, choose “Register for Previously Selected Sections.” Check the availability of the courses on your “Preferred Sections” list. If any of your classes are closed (i.e., there are no open seats) or have a waitlist, you may add yourself to the waitlist or remove that course from your list.
3. From the Action drop-down menu next to Admn-100, select “Remove from List.”
4. From the Action drop-down menu next to the sections you wish to register for, select Register.
5. Scroll down and click “submit” at the bottom of the page.
6. The next page is “Registration Results.” It has 3 parts. The first part shows the actions that were just completed. The second part shows everything for Fall 2024 that you are currently registered for. The third part shows courses that you are currently waitlisted for.
7. Double-check that your registration was successful by going to the Students menu, selecting Academic Profile, then My Class Schedule, and then choose CAS-Fall 2024.
Want some advice on how to put together a schedule? Check out the Transfer Students FAQ: Creating a Schedule, email your advisor in the College Advising Center or make an appointment.
Deciding on what to register for means considering a few different factors: what classes are most important to you? Are there classes in your intended major you particularly need to take in the fall, or a new major/minor that you are particularly interested in exploring? Are there many sections of the same class being offered, and how many open seats are still available? Are you a prospective STEM, Environmental Studies, or Music major? Is there a general education requirement that you would like to complete soon?
There is a lot to consider, but don’t worry: you don’t have to do this alone! When, after reading over the College Advising Center’s Transfer Students FAQ: Creating a Schedule advice, you have questions or want to double-check your plans, email your advisor in the College Advising Center or make an appointment (not sure who your College Advisor is? Check your Lewis & Clark email for messages from them).
Something to keep in mind is that the later you register, the fewer course options you’ll have. Try to register for classes as soon as possible.
If you have taken a course similar to a required prerequisite at another institution, you may wish to ask your assigned Degree Audit & Transfer Credit Specialist in the Registrar’s office about equivalent credit. If specific equivalency is not possible, you could email the professor of the course in which you wish to enroll, explain your academic preparation for the course in detail and your reasons for seeking to register for it, and request permission for enrollment.
If the instructor of the course agrees to allow you to enroll in the class, they will grant you consent to register in WebAdvisor, which will appear under in your student menu under “Registration Permissions.” Instructor consent to register does not guarantee you a spot in the course, but does allow you to register for the course if there are open seats in the course.
If a course you would like to take this fall is already full, you can put your name on a waitlist using the same screen you would use to register (select “Waitlist” from the drop-down menu, and then Submit). After you place yourself on the waitlist, be sure to register for another course that is open.
If your name is on a waitlist and a space becomes available while WebAdvisor registration is still open (through August 16), the Registrar’s office will email your Lewis & Clark email account and you will have 48 hours to register before the spot is offered to someone else. If a spot does not open up before classes begin, you can contact the professor and/or attend the first day of class, and the instructor will explain how they will be handling the waitlist.
If you are unable to get into that class this fall, don’t be discouraged. We have small classes at Lewis & Clark and so some courses do fill up, but if you really want a course, you will have plenty of chances to take that class in subsequent semesters. Instead, this semester, you can register for one of your backup options or a hidden gem.
Also be sure to check out ”Should I have back-ups? How many?” in the College Advising Center’s Transfer Students FAQ: Creating a Schedule advice.
You do not need advisor permission this summer to register for fall class.
However, If you are interested in a course but have not met the prerequisite or are otherwise restricted for some reason from registering for it, email the professor of the course (listed in WebAdvisor) to discuss permission to enroll in the course. If granted, their permission will appear in “Registration Permissions” in WebAdvisor and you can register for the course. Prior to emailing the professor, be sure to consult with your Advisor.
In order to register for in subsequent semesters, all students are required to gain their faculty advisor’s permission to register for classes. You will be able to see advisor consent in the Registration Permissions section of WebAdvisor. Advisor permission is required because a close academic-planning partnership between students and faculty is at the heart of advising at Lewis & Clark.
Registration Troubleshooting
Have you updated your emergency contact information?
If you have created your L&C account, have logged into WebAdvisor, and are having trouble registering, it may be that you haven’t yet filled out your Emergency Contact information; without this information, WebAdvisor places a “registration hold” on your account. To submit this information, please follow these steps:
- Go to WebAdvisor.
- Log in using your WebAdvisor User ID and password (see above if you have questions about this step)
- Click on Students
- Under User Account, click on Emergency Contact
- Enter the appropriate contact information
- Click on the Update/Verify button to complete the entry
If this isn’t the problem, here are a few other things to check out:
Is the class full?
After you Search for Sections, the Section Selection Results page provides details about the current number of spots available in a course (“Avail”), the maximum number of spots offered in the class (“Cap”), and how many students are on that course’s waitlist (“Wait”). If there are 0 spots available in a course, you can join the waitlist.
Is there a time conflict?
You will not be permitted to register for courses with time conflicts, no matter how small the conflict. To make sure you are seeing all the times that a course meets, click on the title of the course in the Section Selection Results and read what is listed under Meeting Information.
Have you checked the course prerequisites?
You will not be able to register for a course if you have not met the prerequisite. For incoming students, certain prerequisites can be met by placement exams, by AP or IB credit, or by transfer credit. Many 200-level courses, and most 300-level courses, are not open to students until they have completed the appropriate prerequisite courses at L&C.
To see course prerequisites, click on the title of the course in the Section Selection Results and read what is listed under Requisites.
Have you checked the course co-requisites?
Many science classes have co-requisite courses, which means that you must register for both lecture and lab sections simultaneously (in fact, WebAdvisor will not allow you to register for one or the other on its own). For example, if you are interested in taking General Chemistry, you can register for both Chem 110-01, a lecture section, and Chem 110L-03, a lab section (or any lecture and lab pairing that fits with your schedule).
Have you unenrolled from the placeholder (Admn-100) course?
1. Go to your Student page and click on “Register for Sections.”
2. Next, choose “Register and Drop Sections.”
3. From the Action drop-down menu next to Admn-100, select “Remove from List.”
4. Scroll down and click “submit” at the bottom of the page.
Wondering about how you create a great fall schedule? What are general education requirements, and when should you take those classes? How placement exams, advanced placement, and transfer credit effects registration? Be sure to check out the Transfer Student FAQ.
There might be some general education requirements that you would like to take before too much time passes. For example, if you previously took a language, and want to continue studying that language in college, we recommend enrolling in the appropriate level language class your first or second semester.
Try to keep in mind how the work you’ll be doing in your classes will fit together. When possible, we suggest picking courses that offer a variety of different kinds of “brain work” that strikes a balance between reading- and writing-intensive, quantitative problem solving, world language, or creative courses. You might love one particular subject, but too much of one thing is usually a bad idea!
As you think about your credit total for fall, remember that physical education and music performance classes are one credit (we recommend enrolling in 15 to 17 credits per semester). If you participate in varsity athletics, you can register and earn credit for your sport during season.
If you’d like advice on how to arrange your fall semester schedule, email your advisor in the College Advising Center or make an appointment.
