Have you ever been to a presentation that puts you to sleep? Struggled to fit the fascinating research you’ve done for your paper into a twenty minute presentation? Tried to follow a Prezi presentation that has more colors than a kaleidoscope? Come to this workshop to learn how to engage an audience’s attention, offer useful information, and raise thought-provoking questions.
Research papers present a new set of challenges in the spring. They are generally longer than anything students write in Fall E&D, and the wider range of ideas and sources involved can make them difficult to manage. This workshop will help students learn how to organize their research into cohesive, persuasive arguments. We’ll discuss the key sections many research papers include, but also some differences across topics that can require distinct approaches. We’ll also discuss strategies for writing effective introductions and conclusions, which become more essential as papers grow longer and more complex. Finally, we’ll talk about strategies for time management and motivation throughout a long-term writing project.
Everyone has different learning preferences. Come learn how to use them to your advantage!
This event is co-presented by the College Advising Center and Student Support Services.
When L&C professors assign a research paper, whether in Spring E&D or other courses, they expect students to develop good topics, find and properly cite strong sources, and—most challenging of all—create a strong argumentative thesis about their interpretation of sources. This workshop will support you in this work and suggest ways to understand each course’s distinct expectations for research and writing. Additionally, you will learn how to develop your ideas and keep track of your sources in the early stages of the research-paper-writing process. With a good start, a research paper can become a defining and rewarding experience for the beginning of your college career.
Do you want to be a doctor? A nurse? Not sure? With so many paths available in the healthcare field, deciding which one is right for you can be tough!
Join us as we discuss opportunities in healthcare, and cover the academic and extracurricular experiences needed to reach your post-graduation goals.
You can help people in the healthcare field without being a doctor! There are many other paths to a fulfilling career in medicine that don’t require medical school. Some of these options include a career as a nurse, midwife, chiropractor, physical or occupational therapist, physician assistant, naturopath, pharmacist, nurse practitioner, dental hygienist, and on and on. This workshop will give you the tools to find the path that draws on your interests and strengths. We will also explore the opportunities you have to build your network and knowledge inside and outside the classroom.
Writing is a crucial academic skill, but it is also an essential life skill, central to a purposeful and reflective life. Surviving the next paper sometimes leads students to lose sight of longer-term goals, but setting those goals is essential to developing into a mature and confident writer. This workshop will offer concrete advice to improve your fall E&D papers, but will also help you start thinking about how to develop better writing habits, respond to feedback from professors whose expectations can differ, and track the growth of your writing across the longer arc of a Lewis & Clark education.
Are you planning to graduate in May 2017? Did you know that you need to apply to make this happen? This workshop will demonstrate simple and smart techniques for using your time effectively as you draft, revise, and edit your writing for E&D and other classes. We will discuss strategies for interpreting assignments, developing arguments, and completing work with confidence. Bring your syllabus and an essay assignment to consider; we will practice prewriting and planning techniques that will help you to make the most of your college writing experience.
