The Department of Defense created the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship to help increase the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance. Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. Fellowships pay for three years of doctoral studies and provide a yearly stipend.
