I’m a marine microbial ecologist whose research focuses on what factors control the composition and activity of non-photosynthetic bacterial and archaeal communities. Much of my work has investigated the influence of dissolved organic matter, the free molecules in seawater such as sugars and proteins, of which bacteria and archaea are the main consumers. I have also studied the spatial distributions of bacteria in the deep sea and off the coast of California.
