Have Arab coffee with a Jew in the New York City of the Middle East. It’s 1928.
The Jewish Theatre Collaborative presents staged reading performances of Sacha Reich’s new adaptation of Café Baghdad. Enveloped in the trappings of a Baghdad inspired café, audiences will experience a collage of stories and voices culled from memoirs and primary sources that will introduce them to a face of a city different from violent and fractured Baghdad encountered in the media today. Stepping back into 1928, they will enter a profoundly modern and cosmopolitan city which presents a paradigm of Jewish, Muslim and Christian coexistence often obscured today, but reflective of trends across the Middle East and North Africa at the time. Performances followed by talk backs.
Featured Guest Speaker: Dr. Oren Kosansky, Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology
The presentation is a part of Portland’s Fertile Ground Festival of New Work and is a JTC collaboration with the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies & The Middle East Studies Center at PSU, Lewis & Clark Office of Student Activities, Congregation Ahavath Achim, and the Sephardic Cultural Center of Oregon.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased through the Jewish Theatre Collaborative website and are available at the door. Students attend free!
