What is the Fowler & Levin Award?

This award provides funding to underwrite or supplement the expenses of pursuing an unpaid summer internship.  It could mean the difference between doing work that is related to your interests and flipping burgers at Tastee McBurger Palace!  The focus is on a transformative experience that will help you define and solidify your career and personal aspirations.

Who can apply?

  • Current LC students (graduating seniors are ineligible)
  • You can apply/receive the award twice

What internships qualify?

  • Internship must last 8-10 weeks
  • Preference given to full-time experiences
  • Quality experience that provides valuable learning experience
  • Internship must demonstrate your initiative in creating a new and innovative experience in addition to helping you define and solidify your passion and purpose in life

What are the selection criteria?

  • Strong academic performance
  • Ability to convey the value of the opportunity as it relates your career aspirations
  • A clear articulation of your role as an intern and the organization at which you are interning
  • A higher priority will be placed on applicants who:
    • Are Federal Pell Grant eligible or demonstrate a financial need
    • Are able to articulate how this experience:
      • Reflects your initiative in creating a new and innovative experience
      • Will help you define and solidify your passion and purpose in life
    • Have academic and career goals that are clearly related to the internship
    • Given substantial responsibility as an intern
    • Rising juniors and seniors

Where can I find internship opportunities?

Posted Opportunities:  Many companies have formal internship programs and regularly advertise for these positions.  Check out the PIOLink and NIC databases for opportunities.

Self-Created Opportunities: Be proactive about creating your own opportunity. Contact a person working in the area where you would like to be, and offer to work as an intern. A great place to start making connections is LinkedIn.

How will I know my internship qualifies for the award?

If you’re unsure if your internship meets the criteria, email your concern along with a copy of the job description to Nina Olken at jolken@lclark.edu.

How much are the awards?

You can receive between $1,500.00 and $2,500.00.  The award amount depends, in part, on your ability to articulate your financial need in the budgeting component of the application.
