The Student Academic Affairs Board funds grants on the basis of merit. We offer four types:

Arts & Expression Grant: With the Arts & Expression grant, the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) supports students who are performing and/or displaying artistic work to the Lewis & Clark community. This work must be academic in nature and can include, but is not limited to, independent projects, musical recitals, art shows, and senior capstone projects.

DUE: March 2

Research Application: With the Research Grant, the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) supports students who are conducting self-motivated research (supported by a faculty advisor) that adds depth and perspective to existing courses, programs, and issues at Lewis & Clark. Such research may be for independent study courses or theses/projects and should encourage student/faculty interaction.

DUE: March 9

Visiting Scholars Application: With the Visiting Scholars grant, the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) supports students who are inviting visiting scholars or professionals to campus who will both add depth and perspective to existing courses, programs, and issues at Lewis & Clark. Such programs may take the form of seminars, tutorials, public lectures, performances, and/or workshops. Priority will be given to scholars who can lecture, visit classes, and meet with students on an informal basis. Expenditures may include travel, meals, lodging, services, honorariums, and informal receptions.  Please note that there is a $500 honorarium cap and that speaker fees will not be covered by SAAB. This grant category is not intended to fund annual events.

Program & Conference Grant: With the Program and Conference Grant, the Student Academic Affairs Board (SAAB) supports students who are participating in  or  presenting  at conferences or outside educational programs that combine current campus-wide issues and college curriculum and in general enhance the academic environment at Lewis & Clark.  These conferences and programs need not directly apply to one’s major.

Presentations

Presentations are required for all grant applications. The SAAB VP will schedule a presentation date after your application is received. Please dress professionally.

Conference Applications and Visiting Scholar Applications are funded on a rolling basis throughout the semester and are due at 5:00pm on Mondays.

Arts Expression and Research applications are reviewed once a semester, respectively.

All applications should be delivered to the SAAB office or placed under the door before the appropriate deadline. Unless delivered directly to the SAAB Chair/Vice Chair, always send saab@lclark.edu a confirmation after you’ve submitted your application to the office. Upon submitting their paperwork, applicants will be notified by email with further details.

Note: There are no exceptions granted for due dates—plan ahead! Applications must have ALL required elements in order to be heard by the board. Make sure to contact SAAB members in advance in order to procure a signature for your grant. Contact the SAAB chair or your department representative if you have questions!

Tips

Start now! Remember that you’ll want suggestions from friends and professors, and you’ll need two SAAB members to edit and sign your grant. If you contact Board members the day before a deadline, you are unlikely to procure a signature, so plan ahead. We’re busy students too….

Email SAAB or visit our office hours. We want you to get funded and we can help you navigate the process.

SAAB Chair’s office hours for Fall 2011: Mondays 3:00-6:00, Wednesdays 1:00-3:00

Revise, revise, revise. Your application should be excellent and free of any errors. Typos are an indication of a lack of concern and will diminish your chances of being funded.
