Lewis & Clark HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program

STUDENT OUTREACH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (SOLT)

The HHMI C.A.U.S.E. initiative has established a very strong and committed Student Outreach Leadership Team (SOLT) for the 2011/2012 school year.  SOLT team members are L & C math and science undergraduates (some undeclared too) with a desire to share their knowledge and excitement for the sciences or math with  high school and community college students. For the 2011/2012 school year, SOLT team members match their expertise in science and mathematics with the needs of our K-12 partner schools which serve diverse and under represented populations. The program integrates L&C students within K-12 environments in order to promote success in science and mathematics for students and also to broaden their access to science. In broadening access to science, the SOLT tutors play a significant role in helping to identify, recruit and offer continuing support to “emerging scholars” - students selected by their teachers, counselors and the tutors themselves as nominees for the HHMI-CRT Summer Research Program.  These  high school students, many of  who lacked opportunity, information and confidence but showed great promise and desire to explore science and math as a career, are supported by SOLT tutors/mentors throughout the school year.

One of our activities for tutors and students is Shadow Your Tutor Day.  This year students came to L &C and sat in on classes, visited labs, met faculty, and heard a special performance by the “Merry Weathers” among many other things- they got a real sense of all that L & C has to offer.

With L & C tutor support, many of these high school students will now have the opportunity to become 2012 HHMI-CRT Summer Scholars, working as a team member along side L&C Faculty and undergraduates in a laboratory based research experience.

As a Math and Natural Science Students (Undeclared too) L& C undergraduate, you can be a catalyst, providing high school students with needed skills and the motivation and encouragement to pursue an undergraduate major in the fields of science or mathematics. By providing consistent mentoring and tutoring support to these students from diverse backgrounds, SOLT tutors can help them realize their potential as emerging scholars and support them in overcoming barriers to college access in the fields of science and math.

For the tutors, this is also an excellent introduction into a possible career as a science educator with an opportunity to design and deliver exciting hands-on activities/experiments along with curriculum development.

So join the team!
