The Science and Culture of Food
3:30pm - 5:00pm Exploration and Discovery Spring Colloquium Series
presented by:
Janis Lochner: Why is nutritional research often targeted at discerning the relationship between disease and specific nutrients? Are there “good” and “bad” nutrients? Is a reductive approach to understanding nutrition warranted?
Bob Goldman: A brief overview of industrial food systems and within that context discuss the development of alternative food economies such as that in Portland. Do such local food alternatives presume privilege? What is their relationship to those who are not privileged by class, race and income? Can privilege catalyze change or does it preserve the status quo?
Barry Glassner: A presentation on a few studies by social psychologists, sociologist, and others that are particularly instructive about Americans’ beliefs and methods of reasoning about food, with a focus on Glassner’s book, ‘The Gospel of Food’.

Is There a Scientific Method?3:30pm - 5:00pm Exploration and Discovery Spring Colloquium Series
Presented by:
Liz Safran, Geological Science
Cliff Bekar, Economics
Jay Odenbaugh, Philosophy
Most science textbooks have a discussion of THE scientific method. However, there are several questions to consider. Do the natural sciences have a method which they employ? Does the method find itself used in the social sciences or do they have their own methods? Do scientists – natural or social – stick with this method or violate in their work?
This event is free and open to the Lewis & Clark Community.

Civil Liberties and Policies in the War On Terror from Portland To Guantanamo and Beyond7:00pm Steve Wax is a federal public defender in Portland, Oregon. He is also the author of the book “Kafka Comes to America” in which he shares his first-hand account of fighting for defendants’ rights in the war on terror. He has an incredible story to tell and we are pleased to have him on campus this February. What is Modernity?3:30pm - 5:00pm Exploration and Discovery Spring Colloquium Series
Presented by:
Maureen Healy, History
Trains, travel and time zones. Does the advent of “modernity” come in the nineteenth century? Explore the geographic and temporal imaginations of nineteenth-century Europeans. They moved through space and measured time in novel ways; a simple ride on a train or a synchronizing of clocks changed the ways people imagined the world to be.
Paul Powers, Religious Studies
Sociologist Peter Berger has described the key dynamic of modernity as a “shift from fate to choice.” Among the many aspects of life increasingly subject to choice is one’s religious commitments, including the possibility of rejecting religion altogether. Prof. Powers will discuss how the changing nature of religiosity interacts with modern emphases on individual subjectivity, interiority, and self-care, and new modes of religious and political authority.
Rishona Zimring, English
How did artistic modernism, especially literature and the visual arts in the early 20th century, respond to the radically altered experience of everyday life brought about by modernity?
This event is free and open to the Lewis and Clark Community.
