Spring Into Action! Lewis & Clark Community Service Day
Date: April 13 2013 11:00am - 5:00pm Location: Various locations on and off-campus (see below)
-
Lewis & Clark students contribute thousands of service hours each year in the local communities. -
Lewis & Clark is recognized as a "College with a Conscience" by the Princeton Review.
Spring Into Action is an annual event that unites the entire Lewis & Clark community for a day of service.
Join students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and family members from all three L&C schools and together we’ll make our mark in Portland! Spend the day meeting new people and strengthening the L&C community while completing community service projects in Portland and on campus. Our goal is to get 300 members of the L&C community to participate!
This day of community service is a collaboration between the Center for Career and Community Engagement, the Student Alumni Association, and Alumni & Parent Programs.

Off-campus volunteer projects:
Friends of Tryon Creek State Park ages 14 and up
Friends of Tryon Creek State Park is committed to the stewardship of Tryon Creek State Park by building connections to the natural world that lead to knowledge and protection of all natural places.
Volunteers will be working to help clear trails and cut back invasive plants.
Home Orchard Society Arboretum ages 16 and up
You are invited to help out with various tasks to care for 1.5 acres of fruiting plants including apple, pear, plum, fig, persimmon trees as well as blueberries, currants, gooseberries, kiwi, and loads of flowering shrubs. Come check out this amazing 30 year-old demo orchard and get your hands dirty in the name of growing your own fruit! Volunteers should be prepared to spend 30 minutes traveling as a group to and from the orchard.
Volunteer with Portland’s global garden in the wild, where they grow and exhibit trees and plants from around the world while educating the community and conserving vitally important plant bio-diversity. Volunteers will be outdoors, getting their hands dirty while working with a wide array of plants
Oregon Ferret Shelter ages 14 and up
The goal of the Oregon Ferret Shelter is to care for all homeless ferrets until a new permanent loving home is found. We are a 100 percent no-kill shelter – no ferrets are ever euthanized due to lack of room. We offer sponsorship and foster programs. Volunteers should be prepared to spend 30 minutes travelling as a group to and from the shelter.
The Q Center ages 16 and up
The Q Center provides a safe space to support and celebrate LGBTQ diversity, visibility and community building. Projects will include painting gallery space and cleaning.
The Rebuilding Center ages 16 and up
Volunteer with an organization that provides resources that make home repairs affordable to everyone. Help organize and move building materials, reducing the flow of materials into the waste-stream and making it easier for the community to find and reuse resources.
There are a variety of projects that we will be working on at the garden depending on weather and ability of volunteers including: mix “complete organic fertilizer,” build tomato bed, build trellises, possible planting, possible harvesting and prepare garden shed for painting. Volunteers should be prepared to spend 30 minutes travelling as a group to and from the garden.
Volunteers of America East Family Relief Nursery ages 16 and up
The Family Relief Nursery is a prevention/intervention program that helps to stop the cycle of child abuse & neglect while also providing development assessments and a therapeutic nursery/preschool environment for children ages six weeks through five years. Projects will include installing a garden and playground.
Volunteers should be prepared to spend 20 minutes travel to and from the nursery
On-campus volunteer projects:
Campus Garden
Volunteers who want to help out in the gardens will be planting seeds and starts, pulling weeds, and shoveling manure, wood chips, and soil to fill in raised beds and construct paths. This will require many but not all of the volunteers to do strenuous work (lifting, shoveling, pushing wheelbarrows, etc). Those who do not feel comfortable with strenuous labor will be transplanting plants or planting plants and seeds.
Tree Planting
Work with Students Engaged in Eco-Defense (SEED) and the Lewis & Clark Grounds Crew and Facilities to make a visible and lasting impression on campus and learn about the importance of tree planting, what kinds of trees grow in this bioregion, and local ecology.
