Professor shares thoughts on educational system at home and abroad

Pamplin Associate Professor of History David Campion
As Hong Kong begins a “seismic shift” in its educational system, Pamplin Associate Professor of History David Campion draws on his experience as a Fulbright Scholar in that region for a recent op-ed in The Oregonian.
Campion notes that Hong Kong’s overhaul of higher education is similar in many ways to the American liberal arts model, exemplified by institutions like Lewis & Clark.
“The students, regardless of their major, will be required to take a wide range of courses in the humanities, social and natural sciences, and the creative arts,” Campion said. “Narrow and specialized training may be adequate for workers, but leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and civically engaged citizens—regardless of their profession—must be broadly and deeply educated.”
