Hanna Varga

UWC attended: United World College of South East Asia
Class Year: Class of 2018

Hello there! You are about to take a tour in Hanna’s life. It all began in the Hungarian town called Székesfehérvár (good luck pronouncing it right!). This lovely place remained the setting for the next 16 years giving me all the joy one needs. Or so I thought. Because when I received a scholarship to the United World College of South East Asia I realized that there is a lot more I need to see and do.

There were so many things I loved about UWC, but my favorite was that it opened my eyes, mind and heart. Having a ‘Second Home’, friends from countries like Bosnia, Senegal, Malaysia, amazing teachers and many opportunities to learn about our world from a first-hand experience is something that everyone should be able to experience. Moving to Singapore gave me a chance to travel and explore Asia, but also exposed me to the harsh realities of problems such as poverty or environmental pollution. Since then, I am committed to spread the awareness of these conditions.

One way to do this is through my passion for Art, which I hope to continue pursuing at Lewis & Clark. For me, a pencil is a tool to translate my ideas into a 2-D version that is accessible to everyone, and I also use it as a mean of communication to pass on messages. Many of my works embrace animal-right or environmental concerns, which leads on to my other interest – and possible field of major – Biology. I also love being outside, which was a main reason for choosing Lewis & Clark - given its excellent location.

Of course, the location of the school was not the only thing that gained my attention. It was also the fact that Lewis & Clark has so much to offer – but not too much. All those activities I would like to try out, all the student clubs I would join, all the knowledge I am about to learn from professors. I have always preferred small communities, where there is not too much stress and competition between students but a friendly, supporting environment. Lewis & Clark seemed to be exactly what I need, and I bet I will not be disappointed once I get there.

I do not like to make plans for the future, but I have some expectations towards myself. To some extent, this is due to the fact that I am a UWC graduate and a Davis scholar. People have placed their trust in me so I am responsible for carrying on the values of the UWC movement and contribute to the Lewis & Clark community with all my heart. I hope I will be able to use my experience to give a sense of the UWC spirit to students who could not be part of it. I am about to start a new chapter in my life, ahead of me there are numerous blank pages waiting to be filled with the happenings of 4 years, and I know it is going to be an epic story.
