Drum set artist and percussionist Brett EE Paschal joined the faculty of Lewis & Clark College in August 2002. Paschal is an active soloist, composer, chamber musician, jazz performer, and contemporary music practitioner. He has performed with numerous Symphonic Orchestras throughout the United States including the Oregon Symphony, Oregon Ballet, Oregon Opera, Knoxville Symphony, Knoxville Opera, Spokane Symphony, Oakridge Symphony, Kingsport Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Percussion Pops Orchestra 2000, Portland Baroque Orchestra, and is currently Principal Timpanist with the Portland Chamber Orchestra.

Paschal has given many solo performances throughout the United States including: Marimba Soloist with the Portland Chamber Orchestra, Marimba Soloist with the Spokane Symphony, Duo Soloist with the North Idaho Symphony, guest artist/soloist and clinician at the Western Colorado Percussion Festival, and a faculty soloist at the Northwest Percussion Festival. He is a frequent adjudicator in the Northwest, judging regularly on the local, state and regional levels. In 2007, Paschal released his first solo CD entitled About Time, available at www.honeyrock.net. Paschal is also a founding member of the Portland Percussion Group (www.portlandpercussiongroup.com).

As a jazz musician, Paschal has shared the stage with the likes of Maynord Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Dick Hyman, Jerry Steinholtz, Emil Richards, and recently with NY Jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal. While in school in Spokane Washington, Brett was a jazz drummer for the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and the Bob Curnow Big Band. Paschal’s background in jazz studies includes Jazz Drum Set pedagogy with Keith Brown from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Jazz Vibes with Dr. Dan Moore and John Rapson at the University of Iowa. Locally, Paschal performs drum set with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Chamber Orchestra, and various other ensembles in the Northwest Area. 

Brett is a published and internationally recognized composer. His recent composition for solo marimba entitled Rosebush has been required repertoire at Italy’s International Percussion Competition. His compositions are published by PERMUS Music Publications and HONEYROCK Music Publications (www.honeyrock.net). The Percussive Arts Society has selected ALL of his published compositions for review in their internationally distributed journal Percussive Notes, all receiving outstanding reviews. Brett is also a published writer for Percussive Notes with two recent articles, “Chord Color Exercise”, and “Stick Control on the Marimba”. Paschal recently published an article in the MTNA’s world-renowned journal American Music Teacher titled “Braille Primer for the Sighted Music Educator”.

At Lewis & Clark College, Paschal Directs the Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, teaches Percussion Lessons (drum set, Jazz drum set, mallet percussion, various hand drums, and all orchestral percussion), Sound & Sense: Understanding Music, Music Theory Fundamentals, and Conducting.
