Hodges finishes 2nd at Singlehands; Burpee places 9th

September 28, 2010

The NW Singlehand regatta was held on Bellingham Bay in Bellingham, WA on September 25th and 26th, 2010. Lisa Hodges ‘11 competed in the women’s Laser Radial class. Seamus Burpee ‘11 sailed in the men’s Laser class.

The first day of the regatta was sailed in 30-35 mph winds and 1-2 foot swells, which is a bit different from the team’s usual conditions on the Willamette. The conditions kept some of the competitors on shore, but it made for some adrenaline-fueled racing. Almost every boat capsized at least once, and surfing the swells was “such a rush!” said Hodges.

The winds were much more modest on the second day of the regatta and most of the sailors came back to the racecourse to compete in several more races before the storm blew itself out and the breeze dropped to 0 mph.

Hodges finished second in the regatta. She is the first LC sailor to place so highly at a NWICSA championship since 2005. Seamus Burpee ‘11 finished 9th in the men’s class. The top sailor from each class will compete at nationals in November.
