Somewhere and Nowhere: Paintings by Nick Borges and Cara Tomlinson

Los Medanos Art Gallery, on the campus of Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, California, will host Somewhere and Nowhere: Paintings by Nick Borges and Cara Tomlinson from October 7 – November 4, 2010. The act of painting is an act of discovery. By putting paint down and taking it off, the painter clears a path in what was a limitless and unknowable wilderness, discovering the painting in the process. Nick Borges and Cara Tomlinson both work with abstraction, but have forged their own paths. Each offers a series of paintings that exhibit a masterful use of materials, as well as profound insight in their discovered works.

Nick Borges received his BA and MA from California State University Sacramento. His work has been exhibited throughout Northern California. Borges creates large-scale, non-representational paintings influenced by the light and the topography of the Northern California wilderness. He paints in a painterly, gestural style in the tradition of Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell. He lives and works in Harbin Hot Springs, Lake County, California.

Cara Tomlinson’s work has been shown nationally in solo and group shows at museums and galleries, and she has been awarded several artist residencies. Tomlinson received her undergraduate degree from Bennington College and her MFA from the University of Oregon. Tomlinson presents a series of elegant paintings “concerned with the process of construction: how houses, paintings and bodies are made.” In these works, paint “conceals and covers over but also creates the illusion of an opening and space … transforming familiar boundaries into the unfamiliar.” Currently she lives and works in Portland, Oregon, where she is Assistant Professor of Painting at Lewis & Clark College.

A reception for the artists will be from 5:30-7:30 PM on October 7, 2010 at the Gallery. The public is invited to attend. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible.
