Lewis & Clark’s women’s volleyball team improved their record this weekend to 2-3 in the season with a 3-0 victory over the Evergreen State Geoducks (25-12, 25-23, 25-14).
In the first game the Pioneers were aggressive with a 6-1 lead on an ace by outside hitter Jenn Dowdy (’13), eventually rallying to a 10-5 advantage. Molly Donahue (’11)earned the Pioneers five more points with a series of serves. However, the largest lead of the game was earned when an attack error by Evergreen State increased the Pio advantage to 10 points, 20-10.
This foreshadowed Evergreen’s continued struggle the rest of the way, and they found it hard to get two more points on the board. The Pioneers finished the round with a 25-12 victory after garnering five more points.
The Geoducks were far more aggressive the second game with both sides tying the score six times. However, a service error by the Geoducks broke the 12-12 deadlock allowing for the Pioneers to pull away. The largest lead of the second game, 18-13, came after three consecutive attacking errors by Evergreen, which included a solo block by Margaret Doweling (’12).
The Geoducks made their way back in with an 8-3 rally tying the game at 21 all. Gabby Hands (’14)broke the tie with a well-placed kill, earning the Pios a 25-23 win.
The Geoducks were most aggressive in the third game, taking the lead out of the gate earning a 3-0 advantage before the Pioneers could respond.
The Pio’s comeback came after a kill by Dowdy that tied the game 3-3. From there the Pios would never look back after taking a 4-3 lead on a Geoduck error and quickly jumping to a 9-5 lead courtesy of another Dowdy kill.
The largest lead came at 24-14 which was followed shortly there after with the game winning point from a block assist by Erika James (’14) and Alicia Callejo-Black (’14).
