Late night eats in Portland: the 3 P’s
April 23, 2010
by Mayme Berman
While it may seem as if Portland isn’t the late night type of place, if you look a little closer you will find the city dotted with midnight munchies that will satisfy all of your drunken (or already hung over) needs.
Pix Patisserie
3402 SE Division and 3901 D N. Williams
If you’re craving a stylish snack, stop by Pix for a late night pastry that will leave you feeling classy. Some notable items on their menu are the “Amelie” (orange vanilla crème brûlée atop a glazed chocolate mousse with caramelized hazelnuts, praline crisp, and Cointreau génoise, oh my!) and the Shazam (caramel mousse, salted almonds, chocolate almond cake). Also, don’t forget to check out their extensive drink menu which features champagne and other bubbly beverages. Sunday –Thursday, 10 a.m. – midnight and Friday/ Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 a.m.
Potato Champion
Corner of SE Hawthorne and 12th
Advertising itself as “Portland’s only late night fry cart,” Potato Champion holds its own within the sea of food carts that cohabit on the corner of Hawthorne and 12th. Although they seem to be known for their “poutine” (native to Quebec, a heaping serving of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy), I prefer to order plain fries and get a little crazy with dipping sauces. Some of the choices include rosemary truffle ketchup, satay peanut sauce, and my personal favorite – the pesto mayo. Be prepared to wait in line: There are some hungry hungry hipsters out there. Tuesday – Sunday, 6 p.m. – 3 a.m.
Pho PDX
827 SW 2nd Ave
Here in Portland, nothing beats pho. Whether you’re having a tough day or the rain just won’t let up, the combination of savory broth with spicy sriracha and slippery noodles always seem to do the trick. On the menu at Pho PDX you can find a wide variety of noodle dishes, ranging from Vietnamese pho to Japanese udon in a yellow curry sauce. Also, Pho PDX is vegetarian friendly, unlike many other pho restaurants which refuse to serve their noodles with anything other then an ambiguous meat broth. Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 2:30 pm and Friday/Saturday, 12 a.m. – 4 a.m.
