The softball team has seen six defeats in the past week after two consecutive days of doubleheaders versus NWC fifth place Whitworth and a Wednesday make-up game against NWC leader Linfield. The team currently stands 0-20 in conference rankings.
The Pioneers came their closest to winning in game two on day one against Whitworth, with the game ending 7-6; game one ended 10-2. Game two started slowly with the Pirates scoring one run in each of the first two innings, then gaining three more in the third inning. The Pios made their first runs in the fourth inning. Danielle Blechert (’12) scored the first run and Caitlin Relyea (’11) the second, both on RBIs. The inning ended with Jet’aime Mullins (’13) striking out. Whitworth answered the fourth inning with no more runs, and LC came back in the fifth to score four runs. RBIs helped Caroline DeVincenzi (’12), Michaela Satter (’11) and Jessica Mullins (’10) score, not to mention Relyea’s homer. The Pirates managed another point in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 6-6 going into the sixth. The game ended up going to the seventh inning, with no more scores by LC, and with the Pirates capitalizing on a wild pitch, gaining them the final point to win the game.
On Sunday, the team played Whitworth again, still at the Marks Field in Spokane, Wash. The Pirates won both games, 9-1 and 7-5 respectively. In game one, the Pirates started by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Pios didn’t answer back with a run until the third inning with a single run by Jaimie Moon (’11). The Pirates ended their half of the inning with two more runs off of RBI’s. Through the fifth and sixth innings the Pirates managed four more runs, while the Pios stayed with their single run.
In game two, Whitworth lost no time in scoring five runs within the first inning. By the third inning, Megan Andre (’13) made the first run for LC. Whitworth made another run in the third inning, bringing the score to 6-1 going into the fourth. The Pios made an attempt to catch up with two more runs in the fourth, and Whitworth made its last run of the game. Jet’aime Mullins managed another run in the sixth inning, but the Pioneers were still two shy of Whitworth when the game came to a close.
On Wednesday, the team made up a game that was canceled from April 3 against Linfield. The games took place at the Huston Sports Complex, and the team was defeated again 12-2 and 14-3. Scoring began in the second inning of the first game, with Linfield managing two runs. In the next inning the Wildcats managed another three runs, while LC stayed at zero. In the next couple of innings Linfield managed another seven runs. The game ended after the fifth inning with LC only scoring two points, both in the fourth inning.
The second game began at 2-1 in the first inning, in favor of Linfield, although game two continued similar to game one. Linfield completed every inning with at least one point, peaking in the sixth inning with five runs. LC only scored two more runs in the third inning, giving up the game 14-3.
