Pioneer golf swings into NW Spring Classic

April 16, 2010

It may have lacked the headline-grabbing appeal of the Masters, but Northwest Conference Spring Classic was still a major as far as the Lewis & Clark golf teams are concerned.

The men’s match was held at The Links at Moses Pointe in Washington. The men finished in ninth place, despite strong individual showings at the top. The April Tree Golf Club was the site for the women’s match, but the women failed to place in the match.

Jack Matthews (’13) led the way for the men with a two-day score of 159, good enough for 26th place. The freshman standout shot a five-over 77 on Saturday and followed that up with an 82 on Sunday. Har Rai Khalsa (’11) opened the weekend tournament shooting a frustrating 15 over par, 87. Khalsa bounced back on Sunday, however, shooting a 76, the best round of any Pioneer over the weekend.

Basketball star Josh Kollasch (’10) proved he is more than just a one-sport star posting a two-day score of 182 and improving over the course of the weekend. After shooting a 92 on the first day he sharpened his game and finished with a 90 on Sunday. Scott Pisapia (’13), who also plays on the basketball team, showed dramatic improvement over the weekend. Pisapia shot a 102 on Saturday, but improved his score by a whopping 12 strokes, shooting a 90 on Sunday. Matt Lettunich (’12) was nothing if not consistent, finishing with a two-day score of 214, shooting 107 both days for the Pios.

On the women’s side, Rebecca Langer (’12) led the way with a two-day score of 188. Langer shot a 91 on Saturday, but failed to match her first day prowess on Sunday, shooting a 97. Alison Fankhauser (’12) shot a 102 and then followed that with a 103 on Sunday. Fiona Corner (’12) did not post a score. Since the Pios only sent three players to the competition they did not qualify to post an official score.

Whitworth University won the tournament on the men’s side, posting a total team score of +16, ten strokes ahead of second place Linfield and 104 strokes ahead of LC. George Fox won the women’s tournament with a combined score of +89. Willamette finished in eighth place, 236 strokes off the lead.

The LC golf teams host the final of three tournaments to crown the Northwest Conference champions at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland on April 24 and 25.
