Stephen Dover BA ’83 and Andrea Stout Dover BA ’83
Eager for a life exploring far horizons, and seeking a college with strong international study programs, the young man from Montana and young woman from Idaho came to Lewis & Clark. They met in Jeff Barlow’s intellectually rich history class, immersing themselves in Chinese culture as they prepared to embark in 1982 on the College’s first overseas study trip to China. Graduating in 1983, they possessed new skills for deepening and advancing international understanding.
Trustee Stephen Dover and Andrea Stout Dover have made a global life together, earning MBA degrees from the Wharton School, developing international investments and asset management in emerging markets, and living in China, England, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and San Francisco. Their teen-age twins embrace this multinational perspective, speaking English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and studying Japanese.
“The world desperately needs people who demonstrate clear thinking, strong communication skills, and cultural sensitivity—the liberal arts values you gain at Lewis & Clark,” says Andrea.
Engaging the world’s peoples and cultures remains the family passion, just as the bequest the Dovers have made to Lewis & Clark will cultivate global citizen-scholars for generations to come.
