Women’s tennis continued to dominate last week with a sweep of Puget Sound at home. The women played UPS Friday, and won 9-0. It was the last home game for the women this season.
Singles competition proved Lewis & Clark as the best team, repeatedly, with convincing scores.

Amalia Nilsson (’11), Lisa Harunaga (’11), Whitney DeBree (’11), Isabelle Borris (’13) and Jill Coleman (’12) all finished in two games, making it an easy six wins, and barely letting their opponents score anything above a three. Borris was able to take UPS Devin Fields down with two 6-0 games, which kept Fields shook up until her doubles defeat from DeBree and Maggie Peach (’11) 8-0. To spice up the games on the court, Peach kept tennis rolling all the way to the third game during her singles match against Ashley Dombrow, consistently playing to seven points and winning.

During doubles play, LC continued to annihilate the Loggers, only giving UPS two points in three games. Overall the Pios showed astounding play in their last home match.

On Sunday, the team traveled to play NWC no. 3 Willamette, only to lose 6-3. Overall in singles play, only Borris and Harunaga managed to defeat their Willamette opponents; Borris took Fabi Dieguez 6-1 and 6-2, and Harunaga defeated Shannon Palmer 6-3 and 6-1. Coleman also put up a good fight, taking her set to three games but finally loosing 7-5 for the determined loss.

During doubles, LC duo Nilsson and Haunaga managed to take down Wildcat pair Natalia Agarycheva and Fabi Dieguez 8-3. The other two sets ended in favor of Willamette, finishing the game in Willamette’s favor.

On Tuesday the team played against alumni for a night of light-hearted fun. Unfortunately, the alumni team had some last minute drops, only leaving three women for the LC team to play against.

Short-handed or not, both alumni and team alike ended up playing real competition. Alum Lindsay Hogan (’05) joined with Peach to play DeBree and Macrina Sharpe (’13), and ended up loosing to the current team 7-5. On the other court, Borris and Harunaga paired against alums Donna Roisom (’78) and Joy Leising-Kelley (’01).

Roisom holds some great records from her college career in the seventies; she played no. 1 and holds an undefeated season in her name. Leising-Kelley has continued to play since graduating, so the duo kept the match between the Pios tight. Borris concluded with the winning smack down the line.
