Artemis claims tournament championship in Forest Grove

Every Lewis & Clark student loves to stick it to Reed College. This weekend Artemis, the LC women’s ultimate Frisbee team, got to live that dream when they topped Reed in the championship game of the Grover Ultimate Madness tournament in Forest Grove.

“It’s really fun to play [Reed],” team captain Sarah Read-Brown (’11) said, “but it’s really fun to beat them also.”

The tournament was hosted by Pacific University and featured teams from the Oregon and Northern California region. In addition to LC and Reed, Chico State, Willamette, Puget Sound, University of Portland and two other Portland area club teams competed in the tournament.

Artemis went undefeated Saturday, winning all three of their games and earning the no. 1 seed in the championship bracket for Sunday’s games.

The women crushed the University of Portland in the first game of the afternoon, 15-3. Their hot streak continued into the second round as they held off Chico State for a 15-11 victory and earned a spot in the championship game against Reed.

“If we had a best friend in Frisbee, it would be Reed,” Read-Brown said, “Because we play them the most often, and they go to every single one of the tournaments we do and we often scrimmage against them”

Read-Brown said that in the summer Reed and LC ultimate players occasionally join forces and play together as one squad.

All the familiarity doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel good to stick to our cross-town rivals out on the field.

“It was sweet,” Read-Brown said about the 15-5 win over Reed to clinch the tournament championship for Artemis. “It’s always fun [to beat Reed].”

After the weekend in which they went 6-0 and were crowned tournament champs, Artemis is ranked eighth nationally for Division III ultimate teams and 51st overall out of all collegiate women’s ultimate teams.\
