The Lewis & Clark Co-op, the only student-run space on campus, opens for the semester on Monday.

The student group, founded in 2004, has received more funding than ever this year and has made a few changes.

A projector has been installed onto the ceiling so that movie-screening events can be easily held in the space. They are also considering the purchase of an espresso maker.

“The Co-op is what you make it and what the students make it. In the past it’s been under-utilized for its quality to be anything that people want it to be,” said Events Coordinator Addie Jones (’10). “Basically, we’re open ears and we can make things happen pretty quickly if people have creative ideas or want to use the space. If people think it’s too much to take on, we’re here to help.”

The Co-op coordinators have established focused subcommittees that work under the direction of the coordinators. To be a part of a subcommittee at the Co-op is a way for students to get more involved by organizing events, even if they don’t have the time to become a coordinator.

The art subcommittee is planning to host another DIY bazaar as well as art workshops. This subcommittee also hosts monthly art shows that will be held every third Wednesday this semester.

Art Coordinator Abigail McNamara (’11) said, “We’re able to collaborate with other student groups and help them make the most of what we have and in that way bring a bunch of small communities together.”

The Co-op sells local teas and fair trade coffee as well as grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, toast, bagels and cream cheese, and nutella.

They also use a French press to make their coffee.

Noting that the Co-op is cheaper than Bon Appétit, Jones said, “I think we get drowned out as a food resource by Bon Appétit.”

The space also acts as a music venue. Organization & Development Coordinator Theora Moench (’11) said, “You’d be surprised how many people can fit in here.”

A Co-op events calendar is now available online at lccoop.org.
