Understanding America’s Prison System

The Vital Projects at Proteus Fund, a donor advised fund interested in human rights and criminal justice reform, has awarded the College $20,000 in support of Assistant Professor of History Reiko Hillyer’s research project.

The Vital Projects at Proteus Fund, a donor advised fund interested in human rights and criminal justice reform, has awarded the College $20,000 in support of Assistant Professor of History Reiko Hillyer’s research project.  Dr. Hillyer’s proposed two-year project, “Windows in the Walls: The Permeability of the Prison and the Rise of Mass Incarceration” will explore how America’s prison system has become not only more prevalent but also more insulated.  This work, culminating in a book project, will demonstrate that the “thickening” of prison walls is actually a relatively recent phenomenon and that the prison system was once more permeable than it is today.
