Teaching Award to Gordon Kelly

Dr. Gordon Kelly, Associate Professor with term and Director of Classical Studies, has received national recognition for his teaching excellence.

Dr. Gordon Kelly, Associate Professor with term and Director of Classical Studies, has received national recognition for his teaching excellence. Specifically, the Society for Classical Studies selected Dr. Kelly to receive the 2016 SCS Award for Excellence in Teaching. This competitive award program–just one to three awards are given each year–is designed to “honor and foster excellence in the teaching of the Classics” at the College level. Dr. Kelly was appointed in 2004 and is Lewis & Clark’s only full-time Classicist; during his time here he has developed eight new courses for Classics and is currently teaching 11 of the 24 courses offered for the Classics major. It is noteworthy that two Lewis & Clark faculty members have received this SCS distinction to date: Professor Nicholas Smith received the award in 1985; this puts the Lewis & Clark Classics Program among a small handful of institutions nationwide that employ two SCS Award recipients. The SCS announcement is available here; Dr. Kelly will be presented with his award at the Plenary Session of the Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in January 2017.
