SAAB Story

A unique student organization helps fund research, scholarship, and tutoring on campus.

The Student Academic Affairs Board, or SAAB, has been funding scholarship and research at Lewis & Clark for over 30 years. Consisting of a student representative from each academic department, the board has awarded over $1 million in funding for peers to attend conferences, bring speakers to campus, pursue original research with faculty, create art installations, and more.

The board meets weekly to discuss issues of academic importance to the student body: curriculum matters, the academic calendar, the senior capstone/keystone experience, faculty retention, and general education requirements. SAAB also has a tutor program that organizes, funds, and manages a student-to-student tutoring program free of charge.

“SAAB is a unique type of organization to have on a college campus,” said SAAB chair Aaron Fellows ’16. “A student-run program that integrates academic concerns with campus life is an invaluable resource.”

Examples of past SAAB grant-supported projects
  • Study of gecko movement in Australia
  • Research on Irish traditional music and the origin of the banjo
  • Presentation of a paper on microcredit loans in India to the Eastern Economics Association
  • Performance of original student compositions inspired by a trip to Ghana
