It is with great pleasure that I write to tell you about a wonderful achievement of one of our students. Ian Macdonald, class of 2017, Foreign Languages Major (Chinese & French) won a Boren Scholarship to support his year-long study abroad program in China during the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Boren Scholarship (www.borenawards.org/boren_scholarship/basics.html) is a highly competitive national award designed to encourage high-level training in languages critically important to our national security. Ian will participate in Lewis & Clark’s China General Culture program in Jinan, Shandong Province, in Fall 2015 (led by Professor Yueping Zhang), and then study at an intensive Chinese-language program in Beijing in 2016.

Ian is a remarkably gifted student, excelling in a wide-range of disciplines, but with a special passion for studying foreign languages. His long-term goals are to use his language skills and broad liberal arts training to serve our nation through the foreign service. Ian should be recognized for his success in obtaining this important award.

Sincerely,

Keith Dede
Associate Professor of Chinese
