On Tuesday November 18th the International Affairs Department hosted a mock Security Council Session. Each faculty represented a member state and worked with students to determine and vote on a response to an international crisis.

Faculty assignments were announced beforehand:

China: Heather Smith-Cannoy

Russia: Kyle Lascurettes

United States: Elizabeth Bennett

United Kingdom: Cyrus Partovi

France: Bob Mandel

When the attendants arrived they received the crisis in the meeting agenda. They were informed that Al Qaeda had staged a successful coup in Yemen and shot down a flight with British, French, and American tourists flying over on its way to Saudi Arabia.  The attackers had blown up the main oil pipeline and were threatening to attack oil in Saudi Arabia.

Throughout the event states voted, discussed, wrote resolutions, and introduced home intelligence reports. Even though a bombing occurred in Eastern China and accusations flew across the room, the five permanent members passed Russia’s resolution in the end. China was the only member that chose to abstain.

The department hopes to make the council an annual event where students and faculty can collaborate to pass resolutions and achieve world peace!
