Miriam Karraker ’15

Major: French, religious studies
Hometown: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Can you tell us what you’re doing this summer? What are your basic duties as an intern?

I’m interning with Bitch Media, a feminist media nonprofit organization based in Portland that provides a feminist response to popular culture. I am a development and outreach intern, and I assist in the planning, coordination, publicity, and production of events, as well as fundraising, managing raffles, thanking donors, tabling at events around Portland, and conducting research for the “Bitch on Campus” program. I have also had the opportunity to coordinate Bitch’s feminist library, contribute to the blog, and sit in on editorial content meetings.

How has Lewis & Clark supported you in the process of finding, securing, and funding your internship?

I could not have been so engaged with this internship if not for the Stephanie Fowler and Irving Levin Summer Internship Award I received. My rent and living costs are completely taken care of so I can focus all of my energy on my work with Bitch. I’d also like to give a shout out to Rob Kugler, Paul S. Wright Professor of Christian Studies and director of strategic initiatives; Susanna Morrill, associate professor of religious studies and department chair; and the religious studies department for teaching me to think critically and become a better writer. With such amazing professors, I’ve been able to see how interconnected the world is and be more aware and informed when engaging with media content, individuals, and communities.

How do you see this internship leading to a career in your chosen field and aiding in your in your overall career development?

Through Bitch Media, I’ve made some really interesting contacts in publishing, the arts, local businesses, and nonprofits, and I really think these connections will help me go far. After being around such dedicated, creative individuals, I’d like to end up working with a nonprofit arts organization or publisher. I’m still figuring out if I’ll go to graduate school or not, but I think working with Bitch has definitely shown me that I thrive in creative environments dedicated to critical thinking and community engagement.

The Stephanie Fowler and Irving Levin Summer Internship Award was established by Stephanie Fowler MA ’97 and Irving Levin, generous donors committed to ensuring that Lewis & Clark students are able to having meaningful and enriching summer internship experiences.
