More than 70 admirers of Betty Balmer attended a gathering in the Diane Gregg Memorial Pavilion on July 13 to dedicate a beautiful grand piano in her honor. This wonderful addition to the Pavilion was made possible through generous gifts from more than 80 alumni and friends of Betty, and from the Music Department.

The afternoon program included reflections by alumna Sandy Osborne ’72, Lewis & Clark Vice President and Provost, Jane Atkinson, and was hosted by Music Department Chair, Kathy FitzGibbon. A concert of piano performances was provided by Elliot Balmer, Betty’s grandson, Susan DeWitt Smith, Assistant Professor of Music, and a duet by Betty and her friend, Leeanne MacColl.

Betty Balmer is the wife of Don Balmer, retired U.G. Dubach Professor of Political Science. Betty taught piano for almost half a century and is still involved in music today. The Balmers remain active participants in Lewis & Clark campus life.
