Associate professor of History Andrew Bernstein has received an NEH Fellowship for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan for his project, “Fuji: A Mountain in the Making.” Supported jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, this very competitive program supports “research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan’s international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts and is comparative and contemporary in nature.” Over the last five years, the funding rate for this program has averaged just 8% each year.

Dr. Bernstein plans to use this NEH support to finish his book, Fuji: A Mountain in the Making, during his upcoming sabbatical. This book will be a comprehensive “environmental biography” of Mt. Fuji that crosses conventional boundaries between the humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences; it will explore Fuji as both a physical place and as an imagined object beginning in Neolithic times and continuing into the modern period. More information about Dr. Bernstein’s scholarship is available here.
