This course is for students who have completed LC’s 201 language courses (or more) in ANY language, or those who can speak and write in another language (with permission of the instructor).

In this course, we will work on developing our skills as translators - in various genres - while becoming more aware of ways in which translation works - and doesn’t - across cultures and time periods.  Practical assignments in translating fiction, poetry, practical translation (generally, texts dealing with public policy), and creating movie subtitles will be accompanied by readings in theory of translation by Benjamin, Derrida, Venuti, others. Guest lectures with professionals working in the translation industry.
