L&C to Welcome Socrates Scholars
Nicholas Smith, James F. Miller Professor of the Humanities, has been awarded a $108,252 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Supported by the Division of Education Programs at NEH, this five-week seminar will bring 16 college and university teachers to Lewis & Clark College in summer 2014 to engage in scholarship about Socrates. The Seminar will offer participants “the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Socrates, build an engaged community of scholars, develop professionally, and work together to be better scholars and teachers of the humanities.” Professor Smith, who has been publishing scholarly and educational works on Socrates since 1979, will direct the project and mentor participating faculty. Participants may live on campus, engage in regular group meeting times, present their own research projects, participate in group activities, and conduct research at Lewis & Clark and other nearby libraries. More information about the Seminar and Professor Smith’s extensive experience in this field is available here, and information about the NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes grant program is available here.
