Alumna assists NOAA with science research in Alaska

Avery Marvin MAT ’12, a science teacher at Taft High School in Lincoln City, Oregon, is assisting scientists on an 18-day hydrographic survey to chart the ocean floor in the Gulf of Alaska.
Marvin is participating in this cruise as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher at Sea program, which bridges science and education through real-world research experiences.
“Through my experience with NOAA, I look forward to informing and inspiring my students about the wonders, significance, and difficulties of authentic maritime science so that they, too, will become appreciative and mindful citizen scientists of the greatest resource in their very backyard: the ocean,” Marvin said.
Marvin boarded the NOAA ship Rainier in Kodiak, Alaska, and will assist scientists daily as they participate in an ongoing hydrographic survey of Alaskan waters. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey uses the data collected in these surveys to create the nautical charts necessary for marine navigation.
