A Wider View on the Humanities

Collaborative research takes an interdisciplinary approach.

At Lewis & Clark, our interdisciplinary approach to the liberal arts means that philosophy students explore how science can shed light on our emotional responses to art. Or a physics major gathers oral histories of a rapidly changing rural culture on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. An English major curates an exhibit of modernist illustrations from our library’s Special Collections. And, often—as in each of these cases—it means students and faculty engaged in collaborative research on or off campus.

A $700,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation will expand these important learning opportunities, enhancing our academic curriculum in the humanities and providing more support for summer research projects.

Our distinguished faculty in the humanities lead students who are accomplished in their own right, winning top honors in history and foreign languages, as well as an impressive number of Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships.
