From her grassroots work with Portland’s immigrant and refugee community to her involvement with activism on campus, Goldann Salazar ’12 epitomizes the Lewis & Clark commitment to service. In honor of her dedication, Salazar was named to the 2012-13 student advisory board of Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC), an organization that aims to engage Oregon students in service and civic action and create global citizens.
“This year we have been planning a student leadership conference for current ORCC members, as well as brainstorming how to get more college students across Oregon involved in alternative spring break trips and other service learning activities,” said Salazar, a sociology/anthropology major.
ORCC membership is competitive, and students must show outstanding leadership and outreach experience. Last summer, Salazar received the Stephanie Fowler and Irving Levin summer internship award to facilitate her work with the Center for Intercultural Organizing.
“I think historically, college students haven’t been given enough credit for our capabilities,” said Salazar in an ORCC press release. “As scholars we are in a unique position to be critical of the world around us and to take action and be leaders.”
Several Lewis & Clark students have been involved with ORCC in recent years, including Gabe Montes de Orca BA ’11 and Aukeem Ballard BA ’11.
ORCC news and project updates are available on the organization’s blog.
