Student honored for outstanding vocal performance

Eddie Barksdale ’13 recently won a musical theatre competition hosted by the Oregon State Cascade Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing.
“One has to apply with three songs; one from a pre 1940’s piece, one from between 1940 and 1980, and one post 1980, of which one can be from a movie score,” Barksdale said. “I performed “This Can’t be Love” from The Boys From Syracuse, “Pretty Women” from Sweeney Todd, and “Torch Song #1 (Newt)” from When Pigs Fly.”
Barksdale took first place in the division for men ages 19 to 22; Cassie Beucherie ’14 received an honorable mention in her division.
Barksdale has been studying for the past three years with vocal instructor Susan McBerry and has participated in Cappella Nova since his first semester. In 2010, Barksdale played Falstaff in the music department’s production of Sir John in Love, and Sam, the male lead, in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti in 2011.
“Eddie has been the recipient of a vocal merit scholarship at Lewis & Clark since his first year,” said Katherine FitzGibbon, assistant professor of music. “He is an enthusiastic and dedicated member of our choir, opera workshop, and musical theatre workshop classes, and we couldn’t be more delighted that his vocal performance abilities have been recognized in this way.”
