Professor Brown honored for community service

Andrae Brown, associate professor of counseling psychology, was recently honored by the Portland Observer for his work “to engage community members and mental health providers to improve wellness.”

Brown was among the first to receive the Portland Observer’s new Community Service Award, created to highlight Portlanders who have made a difference as advocates for disadvantaged and minority communities.

In remarks given at the event, Brown was called out for his focus on treatment models that use the supportive structures of families, schools, and communities to address health trauma issues, violence, and substance abuse” as well as “his research on resilience in street-life-oriented Black men, the psycho-social development of adolescents living in urban areas, and cultural equity in health services.”

The Portland Observer also noted Brown’s work to engage health professionals through the Liberation-Based Healing Conference.
