APOCALIPS, Lewis & Clark’s slam poetry team recently placed 15th at the 2012 College Union Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI), the national competition for collegiate slam poets hosted by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) at the University of La Verne.
The tournament hosted teams from 48 colleges and universities from throughout the United States. Lewis & Clark was represented by Samantha Peterson ‘14, Libby Howard ‘14, Laura Houlberg ‘14, Daniel Calfo ‘14, and Chris Leja ‘12. Libby Howard received a Best Individual Poet Award and Samantha Peterson received a Best of the Rest award for her poem For Beatrice.
These individual awards are given by tournament organizers and coaches to poets and poems that exemplify what slam poetry should aspire to be – it is extremely rare to be nominated in both categories and to win both is almost unheard of.
In addition to placing 15th overall, and individual recognitions, Lewis & Clark’s slam poets were recognized as the runner-ups for the Pushing the Art Form Forward award.
