Students name Iva Stavrov teacher of the year

Students have named Iva Stavrov, associate professor of mathematical sciences, Teacher of the Year. The selection was announced Wednesday, April 18, during a ceremony in Smith Hall.
Stavrov, who specializes in algebraic topology and differential geometry, joined Lewis & Clark in 2004. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Belgrade and her MA and PhD from the University of Oregon. She is the author of numerous research publications.
“I am extremely flattered by the award,” Stavrov said. “Although the award is given to me individually, I believe that it is a result of the wonderful energy we have in the department right now. I am really glad to see that all the good work that we do in our department as a whole—the faculty and the students—is receiving a college-wide recognition.”
The Dr. Robert B. Pamplin Jr. Society of Fellows, a group of students recognized, in part, for integrity, scholarship, and leadership potential, names the Teacher of the Year each year.
The other finalists this year were Kristin Collins, adjunct professor of art history; Reiko Hillyer, visiting assistant professor of history; and Liz Safran, associate professor of geology.
The Teacher of the Year award process is student driven. Each year, the Pamplin Society asks all Lewis & Clark students to submit nominations. A selection committee chooses several finalists and then requests additional student input. After debate and deliberation, the committee selects a winner. The first award was made during the 1993-94 academic year.
