Professor contributes to Portland’s emerging music scene

Professor Katherine FitzGibbon is at the center of a growing musical movement that’s catching the attention of the Wall Street Journal. Though Portland may be best known for its indie-rock scene, FitzGibbon and her collaborators are enchanting audiences with “alt-classical” music, a casual and fresh approach to the staid genre.

On top of her work as director of choral activities at Lewis & Clark, FitzGibbon serves as conductor and artistic director of the professional choir Resonance Ensemble. Her work with the popular Portland choir has been called engaging, and audiences and critics alike laud the ensemble’s dynamic and diverse performances, infused with history, art, politics, and more.

Exploring Portland’s alt-classical scene, the Wall Street Journal emphasizes the supportive community formed by artists like FitzGibbon.

“Everyone wants everybody else’s group to be successful,” she said. “Everybody’s looking for ways to deepen the performing experience and the audience experience as well.”
